Special Needs Initiative for Growth
Covid-19 Infection and Reinfection Educational Program (CIREP)
Location: Nigeria (Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area, Lagos State)
Majorly targeted at the vulnerable populations (Physically challenged and senior citizens)
We discovered in our community that one of the problems and challenges caused by the pandemic of COVID 19 is panic. In order to alleviate the fears and enable persons living with special needs (physically challenged) to avoid infection or possible reinfection, we aim at sensitizing the vulnerable public and ensuring the right information reaches even remote locations within our local government area called Amuwo Odofin in Lagos State, Nigeria. It is critical that human behaviour is controlled in a way that inhibits the spread of the disease. The challenge with panic is that people change their behaviour erratically. They might even behave in a way that leads to the disease spreading, or poses a different risk entirely to them and their communities.
As of April 13th 2020, according to the Centers for Disease and Control and Prevention, it is globally estimated to have 1,862,028 cases, 114,980 deaths and 431,613 recoveries. In Nigeria, we have 323 cases, 10 deaths and 85 recoveries. Lagos State tops as the epicenter for Coronavirus cases in Nigeria.
The CDC and WHO reiterates that Older adults and people of any age who have serious underlying medical conditions (such as persons with physical or intellectual challenges) may be at higher risk for more severe complications from COVID-19.
One of the project goals is to sensitise the vulnerable population in collaboration with the Amuwo Odofin local government, public and private health consultants and ministers on how PWDS (Persons living with Disabilities) and Senior Citizens can protect themselves against the disease, how to clean and disinfect their immediate environment with basic tools and how they can access communication resources for prevention of the disease. We intend to introduce persons with special needs to constructive health workshops that will reduce the spread of the virus. Our plan is to educate them to live positively in the midst of the global panic, set life goals and enhance their own health, safety and security.
We shall expose them to communication resources and aid them to fight against this global Pandemic and eradicate any possibilities of secondary reinfection due to inter continental travel and interactions.
The program is in partnership with the Amuwo Odofin local government constituency in Lagos State Nigeria. Our target beneficiaries are 50 persons living with disability and 50 senior citizens in the remote parts of Amuwo-Odofin, Lagos State, Nigeria. Also, they will be exposed on how to prevent reinfections and how to become local ambassadors of the community with the educational plan on disease control.
Our key partners are the Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Council, Lagos State Ministry of Education, Center for Disease and Control Lagos State and Nigeria Language Translators.
