The IQRA Foundation
Book Drive 2020
Location: Nigeria (Lagos, Bariga Slum)
The project aims to provide a walk-in community library for the children at Bariga slum, one of the less-privileged communities in Nigeria. It seeks to bridge the widening gap in education for children in these communities as the pandemic has further denied them access to basic education because they cannot afford to transition to online education as the rest of the world have.
The project is motivated by our desire and mission to improve learning conditions and access to quality education for children in low-income communities across West Africa. Stemming from the government's decision to close down schools in a bid to curb the spread of the pandemic, the children have had no access to education or basic learning materials for over four months now.
The walk-in library will provide books and learning materials to the children of the community in a safe and social distancing environment. Children will now have access to leisure reads and textbooks, and through our community mentoring program in the same community, can be guided towards self-study by their mentors.
Support
The initiative's budget is 300,000 to cover the costs of renovating the library venue, interior design, and purchase of special texts. We are organizing a social media campaign to fundraise for it.
