Youth in Lead Fighting Covid-19 Through Radio
Location: Zimbabwe (Kariba District)
Covid-19 has had a huge impact in our community, Youths livelihoods have been greatly affected by this pandemic as there have been many restrictions that have been put in place like travel ban of intercity, curfews, school closures. These have greatly affected youths who constitute 65% of the informal sector. Due to such restrictions and bans there has been an emergence of drug and substance abuse, depression and teenage pregnancy and also through social media there has been an abuse of the platforms and at times wrong information is passed and shared on Covid-19 causing social unrest in the community.
As Patsaka Trust we have been sharing correct information on Covid -19 through our bulk sms platform, having school children coming through and sharing their stories on how the pandemic has affected them socially and mentally. As a tool to ensure that they do not get depressed or hooked into drugs we have established an Environmental Club that focuses on Human and Wildlife conflict which is one area that affects residents in Kariba. We also make use of our social media platforms to share information with regards to information of vital services during this time of the pandemic.
