Prevent and addressing the impact of COVID-19 in Dzaleka Refugee Camp

Location: Malawi (Dzaleka Refugee Camp)

The current shut down of activities in Dzaleka Camp, Malawi, with refugees compelled to stay at home comes with unintended consequences such as malnutrition, hunger, and exploitation due to lack of basic services like water, no provisions of food, soaps and/or sanitizers. Due to high illiteracy and inadequate sensitization, there will also be an increase in sickness and deaths from COVID-19 as people continue to move around and spread the virus disregarding social distancing precautions. Our organization is taking a leading role in fighting the spread of COVID-19 in Dzaleka Refugee Camp by responding to the following urgent needs resulting from the COVID pandemic:

  1. Procure and distribute hygiene equipment supplies to the most affected elderly persons, vulnerable women, girls and gender non-conforming groups at high risk of COVID-19 comprising hand washing buckets, bar of soaps, reusable face masks and hand sanitizer.

  2. Print and distribute awareness raising flyers and posters in two main local languages (Swahili and Chichewa) to spread correct information on how COVID-19 is transmitted and how to protect from it as well.

  3. Develop and disseminate COVID-19 and Gender-Based violence prevention messages through local radio (Yetu Community Radio), megaphones, WhatsApp groups, Facebook pages, Messengers groups, and other relevant platforms.

  4. Purchase and distribute emergency food provisions to the most affected families including maize flour, beans, cooking oil, sugar, salt, etc.

Support

Our goal is to raise $ 15,000 through grants and/or donations to continue providing emergency hygiene and groceries kits to the most affected elderly person, vulnerable women and girls at high risk of COVID-19 in Dzaleka Refugee Camp, producing and distributing reusable face mask, running robust door to door and social media campaign.

Our organization is excited to announce our participation in the GlobalGiving Accelerator Program September 14-28, 2020. GlobalGiving is the largest global crowdfunding community working with non-profits in 170 countries. We are honored to be the GlobalGiving vetted organization and very excited about the impact this will have on the most vulnerable refugee women, girls and communities we support today and in the future.

To all our friends, get ready to donate or share our campaign page. We count on you and we thank you for your continuous support.
