Global Compact for Migration (GCM) APAC

The Asia-Pacific Migration team recently engaged in the Global Compact for Migration (GCM) APAC Regional Review during March 10-12th. MGCY's APAC GCM team includes Country Leaders/Teams from 8 countries: Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, Hong Kong/China, Japan, Bangladesh and India, consulting with over 110 organizations, youth leaders, and young migrants across the region. Lauren Power, MGCY's Japan Country Lead, represented Asia-Pacific stakeholders on the second day of the Regional Review, focusing on improving value-driven and evidence-based policymaking and public debate, enhancing cooperation. MGCY's Malaysia Country Lead, Ruthra Ramachandran, represented as a youth speaker during the official side-event on the ASEAN Declaration for the Rights of the Child in the Context of Migration, partnering with UNICEF, the Government of Thailand, and the ASEAN secretariat. MGCY also partnered with the International Detention Coalition, Bonigi Monitoring, and the Government of Thailand for an official side event on Alternatives to Detention after COVID-19.

MGCY was invited to co-facilitate the official ESCAP Stakeholder Consultation with UNESCO for Objective 18 - investing in skills development and facilitating mutual recognition of skills, qualifications and competencies, and co-organize a pre-roundtable on children's rights in the GCM. Partnering with with Save the Children, UNICEF, the IDC, and ESCAP, MGCY hosted the pre-roundtable on February 25th where Paul Namkoong, a member of MGCY's GCM Country Team, was a keynote speaker.
