The COVID-19 pandemic brought significant disruptions to education and schools all around the world, especially impacting the already vulnerable educational systems of low-income countries. To address these challenges, national statistics authorities, private sector, civil society and youth initiatives have been harnessing the potential of data, both traditional and big data sources, to create models that would assess the vulnerability of households and further enable the design of innovative solutions to strengthen local capacities.

Join the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), United Nations Big Data Hubs from Brazil, Rwanda, UAE and China, and the Major Group for Children and Youth (MGCY) for this side event on how to use data tools to improve quality of education in vulnerable populations. The session will serve as a space to present the solution developed by the winning team of the 2021 UN Youth Hackathon regarding the effects of the pandemic on the access to education in Ugandan households. The dialogue will also provide insights from the experiences on establishing data hubs to foster the global statistical community and the opportunities to engage young scientists into professional data networks.
