Mathare Youth Sports Association

Improving Youth Livelihoods Through Sport

Location: Kenya (Nairobi)

Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA) is a community development organization that was founded in 1987 as a self-help youth sport and community development organization. Our organization is based in Mathare Valley and works in Africa's largest, densest and poorest slums. MYSA uses sports to engender broad socio-economic development while also effecting positive social change in the communities with 30,000 youth participating annually in its sports and community development activities. Our organization has also been nominated for the Nobel Laureate Prize in 2003 and 2004 among other global recognition for its effort to transforming lives in Africa.

Today, MYSA has grown and initiated other projects and community development activities. Some of our activities include; comprehensive HIV & AIDS prevention and awareness, counseling, testing, drugs provision, and support services, gender, rights and inclusion, slum libraries, and leadership awards geared towards ensuring our youth stay in school through awarding of learning scholarships. MYSA has also worked regionally with over 10,000 young people in South Sudan, Tanzania, Botswana, and Uganda replicating its model to address issues such as conflict and peace-building.

One of MYSA’s most distinctive qualities is the fact that it is owned and managed by the youth themselves is a genuine community-driven organization. The average age of the MYSA officials, volunteer leaders, and coaches is between 16 and 18 years old. But despite their age, these young leaders have themselves benefited from MYSA programs and have an amazing enthusiasm, dedication, and drive to continue the organization’s work.
