Solve a Problem Initiative: Hunger Relief

Covid-19 Hunger Relief Project

Location: Nigeria (Ibadan)

In these trying times, we have identified the following problems:

sap.PNG
  1. Nigeria as of 23rd April, 2020 recorded 981 total cases of the COVID-19 virus. Some states are on lockdown, making it difficult for most people to access food.

  2. The government issued a statement that 23 billion naira has been allocated to the distribution of food items to the population and they intend to distribute to 10% of the population. (This is quite a low reach, given that the remaining 90% are not included). The relief materials to be distributed include: a 10kg bag of rice, 2 cartons of noodles, one carton of spaghetti, 5kg of sugar and 1kg of salt. Looking at the right to food, it not only includes/ talks about quantity but also quality.

  3. Most of these foods are just carbohydrates, with little or no micronutrients, this makes the food distribution nutrition insecure.

  4. Also, these food items do not consider the toddlers and young children who are in dire need of proper nutrition to ensure their premium growth and well-being. Looking at implementation as well, it is a no brainer that at the end of the day, less that 10% of the target population would receive these relief items. In some places where these items have been distributed, it is been said that only members of a particular political party are being given these food items, and this does not conform with the right to food definition as all people are supposed to be have a right to food.

SDG 2 is zero hunger, and as an initiative with the aim to solve a problem in the little way we can, we can distribute food relief items, not just in terms of quantity but also quality. We will also provide;

  • Staple foods such as rice, spaghetti can be given along with provisions to ensure food and nutrition security of the people.

  • We would also provide considerations to families of 5 members; such that food given is in line with what they can eat and also their nutritional needs.

We will be doing this outreach in the Mapo Hall Community, Ibadan Oyo State
