Harvester's Sickle Foundation
Location: Nigeria (Ondo State)
The Harvester Sickle Foundation is a personal initiative of Samuel Adunreke, who is a SCD Carrier and this initiative had operated minimally since 2010 when Samuel was an undergraduate student at The Federal University of Technology, Akure.
Since inception we have engaged in community awareness, local support to people living with Sickle Cell Disorder, and clamping down after stigmatisation of people living with The SCD disorder. During my National Youth Service Corp NYSC Year, I took on a Community support initiative as a personal project informing the First Lady and the CDS coordinator. This event was to commemorate the World Sickle Cell Day in June 2007 where we made our agitations known to the community organizations engaging local partners like Sickle Cell Support Center, Sickle Cell Foundation Nigeria, Heaven's Door Initiatives and Innovea Hubs.
This year, the event is a very unique and sensitive one due to the peculiarity of time and consideration of restrictions, we have organized virtual conferences to commemorate the World Sickle Cell Day 2020 to create awareness about the SCD, Promote Testing and Guide people living with SCD on best nutritional, hygiene and mental practices during the COVID 19 pandemic. We consider the people living with Sickle Cell Disorder as most vulnerable due to their weak immunity system and fragility physiques.
We have also put together a series of sessions where we'd engage community mapping of people living with SCD through online forms. All these would be shared at the events of June 15 and June 19 respectively.
In the wake of the Covid 19 Pandemic, many families have experienced shortage of food and basic healthcare need as much attention had been waded through the ongoing scourge of COVID-19. But we are creating through our partners a similarity in handling the Corona Virus and Sickle Cell Disorder as both had been declared as global pandemic.
Support
We are needing between $ 10,000 and $ 20,000 to create awareness and mapping project as well as other logistical supports and needs.
Other needs: Connections with high level political and humanitarian individuals to support our drive to create a political will for the vulnerable during the pandemic.
