Youth Action on COVID-19 Response
Location: Indonesia (Jembrana, Bali)
Indonesia, especially Bali, is also facing the current global issue regarding COVID-19. However, rarely did the government touch what children need. Mostly, the actions or recovery supports were focused on doing disinfectant spraying or family daily needs support. Hence, we were so motivated to make a project in our local environment, especially in Jembrana, namely Youth Actions on COVID-19 Response which we divided into two kinds of actions, dealing with children mental health & education, and food/nutrition.
To give the children mental and psychosocial support, we listened to them and provided fun activities so they could understand and learn in a fun way about what they "must do" and "may not do", and how to become a LITTLE HERO during this pandemic. This project was supported by Bali Institute who provided us with 300 pcs of children’s activity books about COVID-19. In doing this project, we empowered the local youths. Beforehand, we gave them some training on how to communicate with the children, how to educate children, and about their safety as well. On the next day, all local youth visited houses and orphanages and did the action we planned. In addition, we also gave some books and stationaries to the children.
We also collaborated with other communities (daridesaku, Tourism Ambassador of Jembrana, Children Ambassador of Jembrana, and some other communities) to do fundraising (by asking donation, starting from only IDR 5,000) for helping our local farmers with their farm yields issue. We consider them as a vulnerable group of people as their tons of vegetables they had planted were wasted during this pandemic. So, we bought their vegetables from the fund we had gathered and we distributed those vegetables to some children orphanages in Jembrana. It was so heartbreaking to hear that some children orphanages were struggling to survive as their sponsors stopped supporting them due to the economic crisis during this pandemic. Thankfully, those veggies could help them to keep providing nutritious food for the children.
